Upcoming Workshops + Events.
2023 Workshops - Standing on the Edge of Unbelief: Doubt in a Hurried World
Doubt shouldn’t be a bad a word.
There is room within the Way of Jesus for doubt. It’s even assumed that it will come while apprenticing under Jesus:
“Lord help me with my unbelief”
Are there practices or a good way to doubt while still following Jesus?
Let’s explore that together.
2023 Workshops - Healing from Wounds: Spiritual Trauma in Our Cultural Moment
We have operated on a quote from Pete Hughes for the last 18 months:
”Spiritual acts without spiritual formation, leads to burnout, trauma, and unbelief.”
A huge part of why Oikos Ideas exists is to encourage a movement of intentional spiritual formation, or discipleship, back into the center of the local church. But part of that mission does not involve overlooking the burnout and trauma that has occurred - due to a lack of formation.
You can’t go through this life without incurring some scars from others, intentional or not. But, there is a way to not let the trauma of those scars hinder your walk with Jesus.
He sees us, wounds and all.
Join us at this workshop to walk-through:
What spiritual trauma is and isn’t?
What reconciliation really looks like?
And how to practice the unforced rhythms of grace that can overcome the pain of spiritual trauma?
2023 Workshops - Knowing Self: Discerning Personality
Who am I? How do I figure that out? We are here to help navigate those questions.
This workshop will dive into the theology and practical aspects of our identity in Jesus, our unique personality and gifting, and how it all works together within the Body of Christ and for the sake of the world.
One of the key tasks as an apprentice of Jesus is to discover our identity and calling. Or as Saint Augustine put it, “How can you draw close to God when you are far from your own self? Grant, Lord, that I may know myself that I may know thee.”
When we become aware of who we are in Jesus, we will in the words of Saint Catherine, “set the world ablaze”.
Registration includes coffee, snacks, and workbook - $10
2023 Workshops - A Window into Eternity: Sabbath Practice
Abraham Heschel writes this:
“The Sabbath is the presence of God in the world, open to the soul of man.” God is not in things of space, but in moments of time.”
Sabbath is a very elusive practice in the way of Jesus. Some think it’s no longer a part of the life of a follower of Jesus and others see it in legalistic terms.
Which is it?
John Mark Comer writes this in his book “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry”:
That’s why Sabbath is an expression of faith. Faith that there is a Creator and he’s good. We are his creation. This is his world. We live under his roof, drink his water, eat his food, breathe his oxygen. So on the Sabbath, we don’t just take a day off from work; we take a day off from toil. We give him all our fear and anxiety and stress and worry. We let go. We stop ruling and subduing, and we just be. We “remember” our place in the universe. So that we never forget . . . There is a God, and I’m not him.
Our goal in this workshop is to explore the practice from ancient and new perspectives and to give practical teaching on how to make sabbath a regular pattern in your life.
2023 Workshops - Scripture as Alternative Story
This is a full session of the Part-Time Residency that is opened once a month to all. In this session we will discussing the alternative narrative scripture offers to the world around us.
Fall '22 Workshops - The Spirituals, The Jesus Way
This workshop is an abridged version of the "Kenosis + Jesus' Gifts" huddle we do in the "Empowerment" chapter of our residency.
Jesus' incarnation is one of the greatest mysteries of our faith and another mystery is His laying aside His deity, or "putting His God card down". This relates to spiritual gifts and Jon Thompson sets the stage well, "Jesus did not perform ministry out of his deity but only under the power of the Holy Spirit."
We will parse through what we know of Jesus' incarnation and more importantly how He laid aside His god-hood to teach us how the Holy Spirit works
The cost of this workshop is $30 and includes workbooks, breakfast, and unlimited coffee.
Fall '22 Workshops - Life in the Way of Jesus
This workshop is an abridged version of the Soul Work huddle we do in the "Know Self" chapter of our residency.
We will spend time looking at what a rhythm of life in the way of Jesus looks like and taking inventory of our current life and how we can sustainably bring our inner and outer worlds into sync with the way of Jesus.
In addition, we will also spend time overviewing ancient spiritual practices like; prayer, fasting, sabbathing, and silence and solitude - to give you tools and resources for developing a rhythm of life that brings you closer to "being with Jesus".
The cost of this workshop is $30 and includes workbooks, breakfast, and unlimited coffee.
